Potassium iodide is a thyroid blocking agent for use in nuclear emergencies which involve the release of radioiodine.

Essential Protection for Nuclear Emergency Preparedness

Essential Protection for Nuclear Emergency Preparedness

In the event of a nuclear emergency involving the release of radioiodine, the thyroid gland can rapidly absorb radioactive material. Potassium Iodide 65 mg serves as a critical blocking agent that saturates the thyroid with stable, nonradioactive iodine. This process effectively prevents the uptake of harmful radioactive isotopes, providing a vital layer of protection for individuals and families in high-risk zones. This high-potency 65 mg format features 20 tablets packaged in a durable blister pack, making it ideal for emergency kits or go-bags. It includes clear, age-specific dosage instructions ranging from infants to adults. Unlike nutritional products, this is intended exclusively for short-term use and only under the direction of public health authorities during a nuclear event. Every batch is rigorously tested in our ISO 17025–accredited laboratory to ensure potency during critical situations. To ensure your household is fully ready, please visit the Government of Canada’s website on emergency preparedness. This resource provides complete information on how to protect your family and home during a radiological event, including a comprehensive checklist of supplies, guidelines on how to create an emergency plan, and step-by-step instructions on how to properly shelter in place. Who may consider keeping Potassium Iodide on hand

  • Residents living within designated emergency zones of nuclear facilities
  • Emergency responders requiring immediate thyroid protection during radiological events
  • Families maintaining a comprehensive emergency kit for radiological safety
  • Commuters who travel frequently through areas with nuclear power installations
  • People who work, study, or travel near nuclear facilities

Saturating the Thyroid with Stable Iodine

The thyroid gland cannot distinguish between stable iodine and radioactive isotopes. By taking potassium iodide shortly before or after exposure, you flood the gland with stable, nonradioactive iodine. This creates a temporary state in which the thyroid’s ability to absorb radioactive iodine is significantly reduced.

5 essential steps for nuclear emergency preparedness

  • 1. Know the emergency signals and plans by familiarizing yourself with local sirens, text alerts, and your specific evacuation or emergency planning zone
  • 2. Prepare a dedicated household kit or go-bags stocked with the supplies needed for each family member and pet that will last three days
  • 3. Establish a family communication plan, coordinate where your family will meet if separated and designate a central out-of-town contact to manage emergency check-ins
  • 4. To shelter in place, move into a sturdy building immediately and close windows and shut off all air-circulation systems
  • 5. Monitor official broadcast channels with a radio for real-time instructions from public authorities and only take protective medications when explicitly directed

Essential Components of an Emergency Kit

Emergency kits should be personalized for your household and include enough essential supplies to keep everyone safe and comfortable, including pets, for at least 72 hours, whether you are evacuating or staying at home. Start with the basics—such as supplies, important documents, and medical items including potassium iodine tablets—then add extra items based on where you live, local emergency guidance, and the needs of each person or pet in your home. Build the kit gradually using items you already have, and make sure it is easy to carry in case you need to leave quickly. For larger households, consider preparing separate go bags for each member. For a complete check list, please visit the Government of Canada’s Emergencies section here.

Choose sealed foods, bottled water, and indoor pantry supplies. Boiling water does not remove radioactive particles, so follow official water-safety guidance.

Wait for official directions

Wait for official directions

Potassium iodide should only be taken when authorities give clear instructions during a confirmed radioiodine emergency.

Bring everyone inside, close all windows and doors, and turn off outdoor air circulation. Keep children and pets together in one central room with quiet activities and comfort items while you follow official updates.

Directions of Use

Take as directed by a public official if a nuclear emergency should happen.
Take just before or shortly after exposure to radioiodine.

For children under 6 years old, crush or dissolve tablets into food or drink prior to consumption; do not allow child to swallow tablet whole.

2 months–3 years: Take half a tablet daily;

4–18 years old: Take 1 tablet daily;

18 years+: Take 2 tablets daily; or as directed by your health-care practitioner.

Take daily until threat is over as directed by public officials.

Warnings

Take as directed by a public official if a nuclear emergency should happen.
Take just before or shortly after exposure to radioiodine.

Cautions and warnings: Consult a health-care practitioner prior to use if you are pregnant or breast-feeding; if you have Graves’ disease or autoimmune thyroiditis. Breast-fed infants should receive their dose of iodine by direct administration and should not rely on a protective effect from breast milk. This product is not intended for use as a generic antiradiation drug. It is only effective for specific use during radioiodine exposure. This product is not intended for nutritional use.

Contraindications: Do not take this drug if you are allergic to iodine, have iodine sensitivity, dermatitis herpetiformis, hypocomplementemic vasculitis, or past or present history of hyperthyroidism. Do not take this medicine more often or at higher dose than directed by a health-care practitioner or health-care authority. More potassium iodate/iodide will not help you and may increase the risk of serious side effects.

Known adverse reactions: Serious risks may be associated with the repeated use of this product. Repeated doses should be supervised by a health-care practitioner. Some people may experience sialadenitis (an inflammation of the salivary glands), gastrointestinal disturbances, or temporary rash. Consult a health-care practitioner if symptoms persist or worsen. Contact a health-care practitioner or public health authority immediately in case of an allergic reaction (swelling of arms, face, legs, lips, tongue, or throat; difficulty in breathing, speaking, or swallowing; shortness of breath; appearance of a severe rash; or fever and joint pain).

Keep in a closed container in a dry, cool place, away from light. Do not use if seal is broken. Keep out of reach of children.
